1. Where
did Panga get it's name?
Panga means "long blade" or machete'
in Africa! Because of the boat's shape it was named Panga by the consumers!
In addition, a young fisherman told me it's because they slice thru the
waves like a Panga. Central & South Americans have adopted this name
for these boats as well.

2. What is a Panga?
Technically, Pangas or Panga Style Boats are Japanese commercial
fishing boats! It's design to carry very heavy loads and be extremely
fuel efficient. It is not uncommon to see a Panga Boat loaded with
thousands of pounds worth of nets and/or fish being pushed by a small 40hp
engine. Over thirty years ago the Japanese started to export Panga Style Boats
to developing countries along with their engines. They have been immensely
successful throughout the world and they can be found almost everywhere
there is water...
3. Fuel
Efficient?
Yes! the most unique feature of our boats
is the bottom of our boats. Sharp entry with a center placket that runs
the full length of the hull. A modified V if you will but with a center
placket design (known as a padded hull design) that is extremely unique.
A somewhat narrow beam combined with this design adds lift which allows
our boat to plane more efficiently and at lower speeds yet does not affect
stability. In fact, our boats are extremely stable at rest or while drifting.
So, the end result is less resistance and less displacement of water...
Therefore, less power and lower rpm's are needed to propel our Panga at
all speed and load settings.
4. Is this a Green Boat ?
This summer fuel will break the $3 a gallon threshold in the US... Compare
running a 22ft. Panga that gets up to 7 mpg w/ a 90 E-tec
or Honda 4 stroke to another traditional design 22ft. boat w/ a 200hp... Yes, I think we can be considered the Original Green Boat!
5. Original Green Boat ?
Yes, this is the Original Green Boat! Originally this boat was designed to use the least amount of power (fuel) because developing countries could not afford gas. But today that efficiency translates into protecting the environment. Panga Fishing Boats has been Green since day one and continues to promote environmental protection by participating & contributing to qualified environmental organizations.
6. It sounds like you guys are a bunch of tree huggers?
No, not in the traditional sense. There are plenty of massive SUVs & Duellies in our parking lot. But as avid sportsman, fisherman & boaters. We are specifically exposed to nature and have built a very intimate relationship with the ocean and it's delicate ecosystem. The original Panga Style boat was designed to be efficient because of economic reasons but we have re-pourposed that efficiency to benefit environmental reasons. Here at Panga we are aggressively committed to protecting the environment, reversing the effects of global warming and preserving the Everglades & Florida Keys for all of our children & grandchildren to enjoy. We are particularly focused on our reefs, grass beds & fisheries. We practice Conservation & Preservation and proactively research & invests in the cleanest processes in producing our products. We urge you to do the same.
We have listed several organizations on the right that we support. If you are involved with any organizations that promote these principals and would like us to help we urge you to submit them to us.
7. Can we get back to the boats? what is the ideal power?
P14LX - 15-25hp
P17LX - 20-60hp
P22LX - 90-115hp, 2 X 60hp
P27LX - 200-250hp, 2 X 115hp, 2 x 150hp
P32LX - 200-250hp, 2 X 150hp, 2 x 200hp
8. Can I get a 150hp on my P22LX?
No, while the boats spec supports the 150hp we have found that it is beyond what the boat was designed for and actually effects the overall safety profile of the vessel. The Panga 22LX with a E-tec 115hp is plenty fast at over 45mph and still supports our approach to building fuel efficient boat packages.
9. Why do you recommend Evinrude E-tecs over today's 4 -Strokes?
Weight & torque! That's it! We have found that the Evinrude E-tec is as quiet, as efficient, as clean and most importantly- as reliable then any of the 4-Strokes available today. So that being said, a motor that is 30% lighter with superior out of the hole performance makes it ideal for the Panga application. For those of you who prefer a 4-Stroke we are offering the New Honda products and your local dealer can build you a boat with any of the other 4-Strokes available today.
10. How
does a Panga compare to high-end fishing boats?
How can I best describe it? Here goes... Today's
top brand fishing are boats are fully loaded Cadillac Escalades while
the Panga Fishing Boat is like those new F-150 pick up trucks. However,
our truck has a quad cab and really great rims & tires. I hope that
analogy works?
Seriously, if you are a tournament fisherman with $85K- $235K to spend
on a boat and you need triple 300hps...you can leave now! But if you
are like me an can't justify spending that kind of money even if you
had it... then the Panga™ is for you. No other boat in this price
range can take you out to open ocean in comfort and safety. PERIOD!
Furthermore, do you know what it takes to run the new triple 250hp 4-Strokes???
heck, even twin 250hps can be crazy. Yep, Allot of money!!! every trip,
every service call... BIg MONEY! Well guess what? A Panga/22 runs really
good with a single 90hp. a Panga/27? 1-200hp, or
2- 115hp E-Tecs , Panga/32? 2- 150hp E-Tecs. That's right!
you, a couple of 235lbs. buddies, your kid and even a dog can go out
all day and reach speeds in excess of 45mph.! Catch bait, fish the reef,
troll the blue water and still spend 1/2 on fuel than you would on a
top brand deep V boat. I don't know about you but that spells "allot
of fishing" where I come
from!
11. How
about the mid-range boats?
C' mon now???? fish from a Mini-Van? Does it
have a DVD player??? We all know how many boats are out there in the entry
to mid range level... I have priced & demo 'd them all. After all is
said and done you will still spend less on a Panga than any comparable size
boat but none will be able to touch our ride & quality build.
12. I'm
thinking about a " Flat Bottom Skiff or Jon Boat" boat?
Back Brace anyone? Well, that's a good boat if you live on a small
lake. No matter what model you choose it is really a inshore boat. But a Panga
cuts like a knife! Nasty short chop, big rollers, washing machine slop... Panga eats it up... inshore/offshore- indestructible, unsinkable fuel efficient performance. Simply put- it really is the most versatile boat
out there.
13. Are
the Panga boats strictly for fishing?
YES! however, they make great dive boats, work
boats, lobster boats, crab boats, tow boats, security boats and yes every
now and then... a pleasure boat.
14. Can
a Panga be used as a flats boats?
You bet! in fact I'm running my 22 all over
the Back Country in the lower keys. Bone, Tarpon and Permit on the flats!!!
Evinrude 115hp E-Tec with a CMC jack plate on a Panga! YEAH BABY!!!
You can even add a poling platform and a Power-Pole!
15. Why
are Panga Boat's bow decks so large?
Casting comfort! Every boat has an extended
bow deck with flush anchor & storage lockers designed for sight casting
for your favorite fish & cast netting for your favorite bait!!!! From
Sails on fly to Tarpon on the flats... an ample non-skid bow deck will give
you the comfort & confidence to achieve your light tackle objective.
16. Can
I troll for dolphin(mahi-mahi) off the Panga boats?
as well as Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo, King Fish, and
every other game fish that exists in the open ocean! Bottom fish for monster
Groupers & Muttons... Drift for Kings... what ever challenge you have
for a Panga it will take you there in total safety. Solid foam filled construction
makes this hull virtually unsinkable.
17. Can
Panga Boats be used for diving?
While we all do allot of scuba diving here at
Panga™. We designed an awesome heavy duty aluminum platform for the
Panga™ that has an Armstrong style ladder attached. It rocks!!! In
addition, you can install tank racks and I myself have become partial to
using a Hooka system. So, check out our Brownie Third Lung System w/ bracket
that's always ready to take you & a buddy 40-60ft. to grab some lobster
18. What's
the range on a Panga/22LX?
About 240 miles! On our performance test of
the Panga/22 90hp E-Tec we filled it with a full tank (40 gal.)of gas.
We loaded the boat with 2 average good ole boys (2 @ 245lbs), Water, lunch,
12 bottles of water (beer) w/ ice and a full well. We dropped it in on a clear
summers morning at Matheson Hammocks Marina (Coral Gables, FL) and ran
straight to Key West on a 22 and 26.
19. Does
the Panga contain any wood?
None whatsoever! However, while the trend and
the marketing hype has discouraged the use of wood in boat building some
of the best boats in the world still use wood today and when properly prepared
and encapsulated it is the most resilient materiel ever used in boat building.
So all that being said, we just didn't buy some composite or foam material
to replace our wood... We searched the world over and tested every composite
material in order to fulfill the quality requirements of the Panga™
legend.
20. What
